    City Council introduces new EPPD patrol cars, approve building award

    EL PASO, Texas - City Council handed El Paso Police Department keys to more than a dozen new patrol cars at Tuesday's Council meeting.    The delivery of the units is part of the Council's efforts to replace 300 patrol units within a two-year period.

    EPPD grows for first in 10 years, announces recruitment plans

    The El Paso Police Department's force will grow for the first time in 10 years.  The department has added 26 positions but police officials say that number is small compared to what the number they need to add.  At Monday's City Council meeting, EPPD presented strategies to help with the force's growth.

    Just over three years ago, Catasauqua police officer Scott M. Rothrock responded to a call that changed his life. After a chase through several municipalities, he was brutally stabbed by a man wielding a large butcher knife. One stab wound entered Rothrock’s left armpit, away from his protective vest.

    Fast and subtle, police using partially marked cars to target aggressive drivers

    Roadside signs might declare friendly driving is the Texas way, but not everyone seems to get the message. That’s why the El Paso Police Department has been using partially marked vehicles to track down aggressive drivers, said Robert Gomez, public information officer for EPPD. Aggressive driving includes speeding, changing lanes without signaling and tailgating another vehicle.

    Richardson police responding to a disturbance on Feb. 7 found themselves caught in an ambush with a man armed with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, according to newly released documents in the fatal shooting of a veteran Richardson officer and another man at an apartment complex. "It looked like he was hunting us," police Sgt. Brian Lee Alcorn stated in the affidavits.

    After a nearly daylong manhunt, authorities took into custody a college student from the Chicago suburbs who police said fatally shot his parents on the campus of Central Michigan University. The university and local police said 19-year-old James Eric Davis Jr., of Plainfield, was taken into custody after being seen passing through the campus after midnight Saturday.

    The El Paso Police Department has added new officers to their ranks with the graduation of the 122nd Police Academy class.  Police Chief Greg Allen swore in the sixty-three (63) recruits in a ceremony held on Monday, January 22, 2018 at Pebble Hills High School.

    The El Paso Municipal Police Officers’ Association sadly announces the passing of retired Sergeant Ignacio R. (Chino) Sanchez #366 who passed away on January 18, 2018 at the age of 87.   (Ret.) Sgt. Sanchez served the El Paso community as a peace officer for 20+ years.  He was commissioned by the El Paso Police Department in February of 1960 and retired on April 4, 1980.

    It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the loss of one of our officers and SMPOA members. Officer Kenneth Copeland, 58, and other SMPD officers were serving a warrant Monday afternoon when the suspect shot him multiple times. Copeland was wearing his protective vest and was immediately transported to Central Texas Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

    Police have revealed the identity of an officer shot and killed while serving a warrant in Central Texas. A statement issued by San Marcos, Texas, officials said 58-year-old Officer Kenneth Copeland died Monday afternoon after being shot multiple times by a suspect while Copeland was serving a warrant.
